Local swimming dives in price PDF Print E-mail
Young people in Sevenoaks can swim for just one pound this summer thanks to a new initiative designed to help the under-16s get fit in a fun and exciting way.

The scheme, which operates at the town’s leisure centre throughout August, has been funded by the West Kent Primary Care Trust and is being delivered in a partnership with Sevenoaks District Council and Sencio Community Leisure.
One of the key aims of the scheme is to foster the habit of regular exercise among young people – an age group in which obesity levels in the UK have doubled over the past decade. And a recent survey by the Health and Social Care Information Centre showed that one in four children in England can now be classed as obese.

Riverhead headteacher retires after 19 years PDF Print E-mail
After almost 19 years as Headteacher of Riverhead Infants’ School, Mrs Christine Dyer, is retiring at the end of the Summer Term.  Mrs Dyer became Headteacher in 1990 at the Victorian site on Amherst Hill in Riverhead Village where the school had been located for 131 years.  In 2002 under Mrs Dyer’s watchful eye the new school opened its present site in Worships Hill where the visually exciting modern building with its sedum roof has become a landmark.

Under Mrs Dyer’s guidance the school was selected by the Government to become a “Beacon School” where other schools could have the opportunity of visiting to learn about particularly successful educational practices to encourage high standards throughout England.  Riverhead Infants’ School once again received ‘outstanding’ accreditation during the last Ofsted Report in 2006.

Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet agreed at its meeting two days later on Thursday 10 July 2008 to investigate the options with potential providers as a matter of urgency, including Kent County Council, to reopen the Stag to provide theatre, cinema and youth outreach programmes.

Cllr Elaine Bracken, Sevenoaks District Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for the arts, says: "The Council has now committed to look at all the options to reopen the Stag to provide theatre, cinema and youth outreach programmes as a priority. Over the coming weeks we will be considering  a variety of options to make sure we get the best deal for the town and for the District."

The Council is now pursuing a number of possibilities with Kent County Council, another public body and other interested parties.
