Tops tips for refurbishing your conservatory by Tracy Ramsden from Enaflo Interiors

A conservatory is a fabulous additional living space for your home and also connects your home with your garden.  It can be used for a family room, formal dining, lounging, relaxing or as a play room. It is the most cost effective way of adding space to your home without having to move house. People now like the idea of open plan living and use a conservatory as an extension of their existing kitchen as the trend is now for homes to have larger kitchens and entertaining areas. A conservatory can be an active, inspiring and relaxing space to be in.

Before you start you need to consider:

1.    Do you need Building regulations?
2.    The style of your conservatory should be sympathetic to the style of your home.
3.    You need to define the use of the room i.e.: Chilling out and reading, dining & entertaining, an extension to your kitchen, play room you’re your children or will you use it as a multi functional space.
4.    Decide how it is going to be accessed from the house
5.    Find a designer & contractor you feel comfortable with to carry out the work.
6.    Set a realistic budget taking into consideration the furniture & furnishings
7.    Contemporary conservatories are generally bespoke and prices will range from mid to top end.

Colour scheming

I see a conservatory as connecting your home with your garden, use a natural and earthy palette and natural materials such as: sisal, leather and reed.  These are very textural and will give the space an earthy feel.
Natural and muted colours will give a natural feel bringing in colours from the outdoors.
A stark white scheme in a north facing conservatory may look very contemporary but will feel blue and cold most of the year so a neutral touch of cream would be a good option.
Make use of the increased natural light and stick to pale shades go for paints and materials that wont fade easily.
Look for fabrics with built in fade resistant and consider the weather trends.
