Page 1 of 3 Young people in Sevenoaks are not the alienated and unprincipled mob The Chronicle would have us believe, discovered Lorna Buky-Webster
'Young people have a general disregard for those around them. If they are not yakking on their phones, they have their feet on the seats’, says a tired commuter who just wants to get to work, but whose life isn’t made any easier by the commonplace irritants caused by young people.
National and local media constantly report how the youth culture today is introspective, rude and even violent. The lack of common courtesy is evidence that standards are declining, as ASBO numbers increase and tragic events such as the death of Rhys Jones happen too often. Things are apparently worse than they have ever been.
Is there anything that can be said in defence of Sevenoaks’ youth? While violent crime is (thankfully) at a minimum, the perception is that young people in the town are guilty of many annoying misdemeanours. Is this the case? Recent events have shown that far from being alienated and unprincipled, Sevenoaks’ youth enjoy and contribute to the community.
